The Formula

How the calculation works under the hood

Last verified: May 2026

Linear unit conversion

Result = Value x (factor_from / factor_to)

All conversions except temperature follow this multiplication pattern once you express both units relative to a common base (metres, grams, litres, etc.).

Temperature conversion

F = C x 9/5 + 32 and C = (F - 32) x 5/9

Temperature needs an offset because Celsius and Fahrenheit do not share a zero point.

Worked Example

Step-by-step walkthrough with real numbers

Convert 5 feet 10 inches to centimetres.

  1. 1Convert everything to inches first: 5 x 12 + 10 = 70 inches.
  2. 21 inch = 2.54 cm exactly.
  3. 370 x 2.54 = 177.8 cm.
Result

5 ft 10 in = 177.8 cm.

⚠️Common Mistakes

  • Adding 32 when converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit instead of multiplying first.
  • Confusing US gallons (3.785 L) with UK imperial gallons (4.546 L) — they differ by about 20%.
  • Forgetting that area scales with the square of length — a 10 ft x 10 ft room is 9.29 m², not 3.05 m².

💡Pro Tips

  • Memorise three factors: 2.54 (in to cm), 2.2046 (kg to lb), 1.609 (mi to km). You can derive almost everything else.
  • For quick conversions, multiply metric by a rough integer: km x 0.6 ≈ mi, C x 2 + 30 ≈ F.
  • Always convert to a single base unit before stacking operations — cleaner than mixing scales.
